About the Course

Learn basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth. Participants learn how to provide care to children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. The course also offers youth the skills to promote themselves as babysitters to prospective families. Designed for mature 10 year olds-15 year old youth, this course is also open to any student of any age.

Target Group

Girls and boys aged 10-15 who must care for an infant, baby, or child. It can be for your own friends and family, or to start your own babysitting business.

Certification

Lifetime certification in Babysitting (physical certificate and wallet-card issued upon successful completion).

Course Format + Length

This format is perfect for those prospective babysitter's who have a hard time sitting through online courses - especially over the weekend.

Eight hours of online learning at your own pace over PLUS a 75 minute hour live video conference with an active duty Paramedic to learn babysitter skills, assess skills and have time to ask questions.

What to Expect


The following are critical skills that each participant must be able to understand and demonstrate during their online video session:

  • Holding (Cradle Hold, Shoulder Hold, Hip Carry)
  • Diapering
  • Bottle Feeding
  • Burping
  • Handwashing (imagining supplies and demonstrating for 1 minute)

The following are coachable skills that each participant must be able to understand. Your instructor will demonstrate the following skills during the online video session:
  • Glove removal - coachable (if you have supplies at home).

Demonstrate the skills identified as “critical” without coaching. Describe how to recognize and care for the conditions listed. The following are critical skills that each participant must be able to understand and/or demonstrate:

  • Check, Call, Care 
  • Recovery Position 
  • Guidelines for Medication 
  • Complete Choking (alone)
  • Complete Choking (baby) 
  • Complete Choking (child/adult) 
  • Anaphylaxis and Use of EpiPen Auto Injector
  • Life-Threatening External Bleeding


Equipment and Supplies You Will Need


You will be tested on the Critical Skills in your live online video session. You will have a chance to learn the skill, show the skill, and be tested on the skill. You must have proper equipment on class in order to demonstrate the skills shown in this chapter. You will need:

  1. Baby doll, teddy bear, or mannequin.
  2. One set of clothes to dress the doll.
  3. One diaper, or dishcloth to make a cloth diaper.
  4. One piece of baby wipe, tissue paper, or paper towel.
  5. One small square blanket for swaddling practice (extra skill - not critical)
  6. One baby bottle, or water bottle to mimic feeding
  7. The ability to place your web camera in a position to show your full body for:
    • Choking skills
    • CPR
  8. One marker or pen.
